If you know me you'll know I'm partial to stories — nonfiction and otherwise — that involve monkeys, primates, simians and biological genera of similar ilk.
The story I shared above was buried on page 3 of the June 22, 1956, edition of The Monterey Peninsula Herald. It is not your typical run-of-the-mill monkey story; it’s not just another account of a monkey running amok in the neighborhood. In fact, this particular monkey story is one of my favorites. And I’ll tell you why.
What makes this monkey story a great monkey story is because the newspaper writer wryly describes how Mr. Zimmerman was taking a shower in the next room while Patrolman Harvey chased the monkey around Mr. Zimmerman's adjacent bedroom with a sack.
In my opinion, details like that make monkey stories come alive because they conjure comic images in the mind's eye. — Joe Livernois
